How long does an SEO audit take?

To begin this article and begin explaining how long an SEO audit can take, I’m going to compare carrying out an SEO audit for a website to carrying out interior design and interior fit-outs for a house. You’ll have to bare with me, though, please.

If you did interior designs and fit-outs, and a customer came to you living in a one-bedroom apartment, your task at hand might be pretty straightforward and fast.

Alternatively, if the big chief at the Empire State Building came to you for the same, you might not be done in the time it takes you to drink a cup of coffee, right?

Well, it’s the same when it comes to SEO audits and guessing how long one make take to complete one.

If the website has three pages: a homepage, an about us page and a contact us page, the SEO audit will be super simple and I can probably even give it to you by just looking at it in less than two minutes.

However, if a large online store like Amazon enquired for an SEO audit, I’d rapidly be looking to hire 50 other SEOs.

What factors could make an SEO audit take longer to complete?

A good SEO audit is one that covers all areas of your brand’s SEO, such as:

  • On-page SEO

  • Technical SEO

  • Off-page SEO

  • Local SEO

  • Content marketing

So, if your website does not have a local Google Business profile, for example, that could mean your website’s SEO audit takes less time to carry out.

So how long will it actually take to audit my website?

Ultimately, the bigger your website and the more you have published and created through your domain and brand, the longer your website will take to audit for all relevant SEO areas. In that case, then, if you are aware that your website is quite significant in size and your SEO audit is relatively fast to complete, then the audit has either been completed wrong or – to be blunt – not very well.

An SEO audit done right, done well and done extensively can take anywhere between half a day to several days of an SEO’s time.
