How many pages should a website have for SEO?

I wouldn’t be an SEO, and this wouldn’t be an article answering a question about SEO if the short and instant response isn’t ‘well, it depends.’

But, that wouldn’t be a good article, would it? It also wouldn’t be a good answer. A good answer – on the contrary – to how many pages your website should have, is as many as possible!

One thing that needs to be understood is the reason behind your curiosity regarding the volume of web pages you have for effective SEO.

Is it because you think, or are hoping, that there is a specific number of pages that, once hit, will mean you have ‘completed’ SEO?

Like everything in SEO, the quantity of web pages being indexed in Google from your website is not neccesarily a significant factor on its own. Instead, consider that a web page, when written, optimised and published, will (you hope, of course) rank in Google’s SERPs (search engine results pages) for the keywords that are on that page.

On top of this and in theory, the more you publish expertly written content on your website showing to Google that you’re an authority on your specific subject, the more keywords you will rank for, and higher, too.

Ultimately, with all of that SEO theory considered, the logical answer is that the more pages your website has, the better your website’s SEO will be.

There is not a specific number of pages your website should have for SEO, it really depends

Of course, and again as in all things regarding search engine optimisation, there are nuances, technicalities and specifics that are important when it comes to creating pages on your website for SEO.

For example, if you wake up tomorrow and create and publish 100 web pages for your website, but they all have duplicated content or thin content, then you will harm your SEO.

But, if you’re publishing one article a day for several years that is a minimum of 500 words and relevant to your website’s niche, you’ll no doubt benefit from that.

Will my website’s SEO be better if I have more pages on my website?

If your website’s pages that you are actively publishing and working on with the aim to improve your SEO tick the following boxes, then the answer is yes:

  • Your web page is longer than 400 words and therefore not considered a thin and useless page.

  • Your web page has unique and well-written content.

  • Your web page is optimised with effective on-page SEO.

  • Your web page has a thoughtful and well-optimised title tag and meta description.

  • Your web page includes images with SEO-optimised alt attributes (alt tags) and file names.

  • Your web page’s content is structured well hierarchically with the correct heading tags.

  • The content you are publishing on your website is topical, relevant and NEEDED on your website. Part of this is ensuring that each web page you are publishing is targetting and aiming to rank for something similar, but not identical. Eg: if you run a dog bed website and your goal is to rank the main dog beds category page for dog beds. You would not upload dozens of web pages targetting the keyword ‘dog beds’, too. You’d target semantic keywords for that topic.

  • Your website has webpages that are beautiful for the reader to view and fast for the reader to load.

So, how many pages should my website have for SEO then?

To conclude, if you are actively creating and publishing pages with the above webpage SEO checks in mind, then the more pages you have on your website the better when it comes to improving your SEO.
